Abstract: Animal hearing and sound production have the potential to teach us about ourselves and the environment. In addition to being the key to translational research in audiology and speech-language pathology functionality, anatomy, neurology and pathology. This has never more true than in studies of hearing loss, noise impacts (especially in working animals), and communication.
As an example, hearing loss in dogs has a profound effect on working ability, cognition and can occur for many reasons including noise-induced loss, conductive loss, presbycusis, and PTSI. In this presentation, the first animal audiology research center and clinic known as FETCHLAB USA will be introduced as well as how to obtain a certification as an animal audiologist.
Summary: The chosen instructional level relates to this presentation being an introduction to animal audiology only. Animal audiology is a new field in its infancy that has civilian and working animal relevance to research, environmental, and safety of the animals and human related to the animal.
Clinical Takeaways: The clinical takeaway for this session is to understand animal audiology as a new field of study that links human audiology and audiological clinical research with biological and veterinary aspects.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe topics comprised of animal bioacoustics and audiology.
Upon completion, participants will be able to explain how to obtain the certification in animal audiology.
Upon completion, participants will be able to recall the scope of the animal audiology program at FETCHLAB.
