I am a 66-year-old PhD candidate in Tulane Medical School's Aging Studies program. My primary focus and the subject of my dissertation is age-related hearing loss. For said dissertation I am conducting a clinical trial examining the impact of cognitive auditory training on older adults with and without perceived hearing loss. I'm doing that under the direction of Dr. Annette Hurley at the LSU Department of Communication Disorders. I hope to submit it this Summer.
Presbycusis has broken my heart more times than I care to count. When the opportunity to pursue this PhD presented itself, I jumped at the chance specifically to address this issue. My hope is that I can combine my past life in marketing and finance with my current research to help persuade the public that hearing loss is neither inexorable nor inevitable and decidedly not trivial.
