Dr. Moncrieff is an internationally recognized expert in the field of auditory processing disorders, trained by Dr. James Jerger to focus on dichotic listening skills. She has described “amblyaudia” and “dichotic dysaudia,” two dichotic listening deficits that are highly prevalent among at-risk groups of children, i.e. those assessed clinically for APD, adolescents residing in juvenile detention centers, and children with cochlear implants unable to transition to mainstream education. She has produced evidence that they are also highly prevalent in supposedly low-risk, typically developing schoolchildren, with rates that may reflect regional differences. She developed Auditory Rehabilitation for Interaural Asymmetry (ARIA), a short-term auditory training regimen that improves dichotic listening skills, speech-in-noise performance, and reduces cortical activation levels when listening to dichotic stimuli, measured through fMRI. She is currently researching methods to differentiate these two dichotic deficits through behavioral, electrophysiologic, and imaging methods before and after ARIA training.
