Abstract: The Amplification Discussion Forum is an opportunity for professionals to connect and discuss some of today's most exciting topics in the prescription of hearing aids. The audience will be presented with a series of four questions, given time to discuss, and provided the opportunity to share conclusions with the rest of the group. We will begin by discussing the impact of over-the-counter hearing aids, followed by time to share strategies for differentiating between over the counter and prescription technology. The second half of the session will focus on current technologies and their impact on clinical outcomes, including a chance to discuss helpful hints for technology optimization.
Summary: The Amplification Discussion Forum will be structured around four questions intended to provoke thoughtful discussions about hearing aid technology and its role in improving patient outcomes. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on and respond to these questions in small group discussions. At the end of each discussion, groups will be invited to share their conclusions with the rest of the Forum, providing a broad understanding of the key discussion points and insights from peers and colleagues.
The first topic of discussion will allow participants to share their experiences with over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids and patients who have purchased them. More than two years have passed since the FDA’s approval of OTC hearing aids, which prompted many audiologists to expect a sea change in the existing model of clinical practice. However, the realized impact varies greatly from one practice to the next. In this part of the Discussion Forum, participants will explore the current and potential effects of OTC hearing aids on both the profession and the patient experience. Time will also be dedicated to sharing strategies for differentiating between OTC and prescription technology. This is an important consideration, as our patients are actively considering both options, and many professionals approach the management of this topic differently. This is a chance to share your best practices and learn from others' experiences.
The second half of the session will shift the focus to the current landscape of hearing aid technologies and their direct impact on clinical outcomes. In this part of the Forum, we will delve into how these new technologies are affecting clinical practices, patient satisfaction, and overall hearing health. To complement the discussion on technology, we will also explore practical tips and best practices for technology optimization. As hearing aid technology becomes more sophisticated, the basic guidance received from research and industry may not keep pace with clinical experiences, which should also inform prescriptive approaches. This segment will provide an opportunity for attendees to share their experiences and gather actionable strategies for optimizing hearing aid performance. Whether it’s adjusting settings for optimal sound quality, ensuring patient comfort, or troubleshooting connectivity issues, sharing tips and tricks with peers and colleagues can make upcoming fittings more efficient or effective.
By the end of the forum, attendees will leave with a broadened understanding of the key challenges and opportunities that result from the prescription of modern hearing aid technology, as well as practical knowledge that can be directly applied to their clinical practices.
Brief Summary of Clinical Takeaways: The clinical takeaway for this session is an improved understanding of strategies for differentiating between OTC and prescription hearing aids and a broader understanding of optimization techniques for modern hearing aid technologies.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to explain how the availability of over-the-counter hearing aids has / has not affected their routine audiologic clinical practice.
Upon completion, participants will be able to explain effective approaches to differentiating service and technology offerings from direct-to-consumer alternatives.
Upon completion, participants will be able to identify both successful and unsuccessful aspects of current technology offers, while also summarizing desirable changes for future hearing technology.
