LM313 - Addressing Ableism

Abstract:
Our society has typically defined “disability” by restrictions that relate to what an individual cannot do in relation to learning, self-care, and/or daily living. This is an ableist, “deficit,” viewpoint that does not take into consideration the use of strategies and adaptations that create opportunities to empower all persons with disabilities (Wood, 2022). This presentation will offer insights into ableist presumptions that can be reflected in how we treat those labeled with a “disability.” Examples and descriptions of disablism/ableism will be shared, along with actions that can help reduce these types of acts in our work and our society.

Summary:
There can be many biases and stereotypes associated with the term “disability.” These prejudices often lead to forms of disablism/ableism, which can be intentional or unintentional. Simply explained, ableism is "discrimination in favor of people without disabilities" (Conley and Nadler, 2022). Disablism is the direct discrimination against people with disabilities.

Many experts and advocates support the label “disability” over such labels as “special needs.” Disability is a cultural and social identity. Avoiding the word disabled only leads to further disparagement of this term.

The purpose of this presentation is to discuss ableist biases toward those who identify as disabled (identity-first) or as a person with a disability (person-first). The different types of disablism/ableism encountered by individuals with disabilities will be presented. Other factors that marginalize individuals with disabilities such as pity affect, inspirational narratives, and infantilization will also be discussed, including how they bring about disability oppression within our work and society.

Findings from studies that have been shown to help reduce ableism and increase social inclusion of disabled individuals will be reviewed. Strategies to be discussed will cover identity salience, barrier reductions, and facilitation of relationships with people with disabilities.

The clinical takeaway for this session is participants will be able to judge how ableist biases affect our perceptions and treatment of our students, clients, and/or patients. Also, attendees will be able learn about practices that can systematically address and minimize disablism/ableism within our settings and society.
