LM326 - Beyond the Clinic: How Outreach Can Revitalize and Strengthen Professional Identity

Abstract:
WHO estimates that 466 million people globally are affected by disabling hearing loss (34 million children of which 60% is preventable), indicating an urgent need for intervention. US Audiologists can play a pivotal role in aiding these individuals by participating in humanitarian work. Audiologists not only help provide life-changing care to underserved communities but also experience personal and professional growth, exposure to diverse cultures and ways to enhance their own practice at home. This session will explore the “whys” and “hows” to becoming more active globally and in their own communities returning to their practices reinvigorated and inspired.

WHY humanitarian work? This section of the talk will focus on the importance of humanitarian work, globally and personally.

With 466 million people globally affected by disabling hearing loss, 34 million of whom are children, and 60% of childhood hearing loss being preventable (World Health Organization), there is an urgent need for intervention. We know that early diagnosis is crucial for children to develop essential communication skills, and how audiologists can play a pivotal role in transforming challenges into triumphs for families facing hearing loss. By participating in humanitarian work, audiologists not only help provide life-changing care to underserved communities but also experience personal growth through fulfilling their passion for healthcare as a fundamental right. These trips offer opportunities for professional rejuvenation, exposure to diverse cultures, and inspiration to prevent burnout. Attendees will learn how to become involved in humanitarian initiatives of all sizes, enhancing their professional identity while making a profound global impact. This session encourages audiologists to broaden their horizons, contribute meaningfully to global hearing healthcare, and return to their practices reinvigorated and motivated.

The audience participation will be solicited to brainstorm on the many personal reasons that a humanitarian trip help reinvigorate their career, including:
Volunteering at something that you are passionate about - biggest impact.
Believing that hearing healthcare is a right (our mission).
Experiencing new parts of the world.
Exposing family members (kids) to other cultures.

HOW does it work?
This section of the talk with discuss the importance of the World Health Organization guidelines when developing a humanitarian outreach. The discussion will also include the goal of sustainability in a community and the work involved.

How does this impact my practice?
This section of the talk will focus on what the impact could be on the audiologist’s practice such as how to talk with patients about their global work, exposure to new audiology methods and work benefits.

The audience will also contribute their ideas on how humanitarian work can influence their employees and patients at home, including:
Working benefit for employees who love to travel/who have dreamed of humanitarian work.
Honing skills: learning how to use new equipment, different hearing aids, adapting to unusual situations.
