LM107 - Exploring Stethoscope Options for Health Professionals with Hearing Loss

Abstract:
Meeting technical standards for stethoscope use is challenging, especially in noisy environments and for individuals with hearing loss. This presentation reviews modern stethoscope options, including electronic and amplified models, and explores how audiologists can guide healthcare professionals and students in overcoming these barriers. We will cover the acoustics of stethoscopes, connections with hearing devices, selection strategies, and AI-enhanced solutions. Practical advice from the AMPHL Stethoscope Equity Project will be shared, along with lived experiences on accessing accommodations and promoting professional advocacy in educational and workplace settings.

Summary: Meeting technical standards for stethoscope use poses significant challenges for health professionals and students, particularly in noisy work environments and for those with hearing impairments (Fabry, 1993; Patel, Callahan, Callahan, Jones, Graber, Foster, Glifort, & Wodicka, 1998; Cain, Ahroon, & Greenburg, 2002; Rennert, Morris, & Barrare, 2004; Nelson, Rajamani, & Ermann, 2014; Alanazi, Atcherson, Franklin, and Bryan, 2020). As the cornerstone tool in clinical diagnostics, the stethoscope's efficacy is paramount for accurate patient assessment . However, traditional acoustic stethoscopes often fall short in environments with high ambient noise or for users with reduced hearing capabilities, potentially compromising patient care and professional performance.

This presentation delves into the advancements in stethoscope technology, focusing on electronic and amplified stethoscopes that address these challenges. By providing an overview of modern stethoscope options, we aim to equip audiologists with the knowledge and resources necessary to support healthcare professionals, students, and aspiring medical practitioners in overcoming auditory barriers. Empowering these individuals not only enhances their clinical effectiveness but also promotes inclusivity and diversity within the healthcare workforce (see e.g., Moreland, Latimore, Sen, Arato, & Philip, 2013; McKee, Barnett, Block, & Pearson, 2013 ).

A foundational aspect of this discussion is understanding the relationships between auscultation sounds, stethoscope acoustics and functionality, and its interaction with other hearing devices for individuals with hearing loss (Arnott, Pfeiffer, & Tavel, 1984; Gavriely et al., 1995; Dolan, Oliver, & Maurer, 2001; Atcherson, 2010; 2014). In addition to sharing acoustic data on a variety of existing and historical examples of stethoscopes (makes and models will be redacted), we will we share promising features and developments, including visual display devices that translate acoustic signals into visual data, and emerging artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that enhance diagnostic accuracy and user experience. These innovations represent significant strides toward making stethoscope use more accessible and effective for individuals with and without hearing loss, thereby reducing reliance on traditional acoustic methods and minimizing potential misdiagnoses.

A key highlight of the presentation is the Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses (AMPHL) Stethoscope Equity Project (https://www.amphl.org/stethoscope-equity-project). This initiative offers invaluable resources, including advice on selecting suitable stethoscopes and providing loaner devices for trial periods. By showcasing the project's impact, we underscore the importance of collaborative efforts in fostering an equitable work environment for medical professionals with hearing impairments. Attendees will gain insights into how such programs can be integrated into their institutions to support staff and students effectively.

Ultimately, this presentation aims to inspire meaningful change by highlighting the intersection of audiology and clinical practice. By addressing the barriers to effective stethoscope use, we contribute to the broader goal of enhancing healthcare quality and accessibility.
