Abstract: Vestibular assessment often involves a complex integration of results obtained from a number of different testing protocols. Rotational vestibular assessment is one such test protocol that can provide a significant degree of diagnostic information regarding a patient’s peripheral and central vestibular function. Understanding the various rotational stimulus protocols and wide array of outcome measures can be overwhelming. This learning lab will discuss the various stimulus protocols often employed during routine rotational assessment as well as explore the numerous outcome measures and how they are inter-related.
Summary: Understanding the various rotational stimulus and recording protocols associated with rotational vestibular assessment, as well as the wide array of outcome measures can be overwhelming. This learning lab will discuss the various stimulus protocols often employed during routine rotational assessment as well as explore the numerous outcome measures and how they are inter-related within themselves as well as to other outcome measures from other test protocols in out vestibular battery (e.g., caloric responses).
This Learning Lab is for both the intermediate as well as the advanced vestibular clinician as it will draw heavily upon a broad understanding of vestibular anatomy and physiology. In order to best appreciate the complexities associated with rotational outcome measures, the attendee is also encouraged to have some clinical experience with performing and interpreting a comprehensive vestibular battery.
For a vestibular clinician new to rotational assessment, the objective of this learning lab is to offer a deeper and more advanced appreciation and understanding of the complexities associated with vestibular physiology through a comprehensive discussion of how the vestibular system responds differentially to a variety of rotational stimuli and how such testing can significantly increase the diagnostic yield of vestibular pathology. For the vestibular clinical that is currently performing some rotational assessment, this Learning Lab will hope to increase the attendees understanding of diagnostic patterns and further extend and deepen their appreciation for the diagnostic power of rotational vestibular assessment, particularly when other vestibular tests fall short in providing sufficient pathological insight.
Finally, the didactic concepts presented will be enhanced and supported by clinical case examples throughout the discussion.
Brief Summary of Clinical Takeaways: The clinical takeaway for this session is to have a better appreciation for and more comprehensive understanding of the diagnostic value added from performing rotational vestibular assessment.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion, participants will be able to explain the key tests and primary outcome measures to a comprehensive rotational assessment
Upon completion, participants will be able to describe the interpretive aspects of the various rotational outcome measures and the diagnostic implications of each
Upon completion, participants will be able to explain how rotational testing is critical to a comprehensive vestibular assessment and how the various rotational outcome measures relate to other vestibular tests
